North Ipswich Railway Workshops is an impressive part of Queensland’s history and culture. Built over the span of a century, this site was officially recognised as heritage-listed in 1997. Visitors today can delve into its fascinating past at the museum or marvel at 19th–20th Century engineering on display – all testament to Australia’s proud railway legacy.

Queensland Museum is the proud guardian of our great state’s natural and cultural history, boasting a large collection that chronicles Queensland’s evolution. With five public museums across Queensland – from Brisbane to Townsville – we provide museum services for people all over the state, offering interactive experiences such as SparkLab and Sciencentre and priceless artifacts housed at Cobb+Co Museum or The Workshops Rail Museum. Our research centre located in Hendra further allows us to delve deeper into this fascinating world of exploration!

Step into the past and explore Queensland’s golden age of rail at a unique museum. The old boilershop houses an impressive collection of restored locomotives and carriages, as well as the state’s largest model railway which displays intricate recreations of real-life scenes from around Queensland. Twice daily heritage tours provide insight to those interested in diving further into this amazing history, while kids (and adults too!) can have fun during school holidays with Day out with Thomas program – perfect for adding some nostalgia!
